I first discovered the Kent and Sussex Oxted lines in 1965 shortly before the demise of the Eridge – Polegate railway. Steam could still be seen on this part of the Southern Region in the form of British Railways class 4 2-6-4 tank locomotives, but increasingly common were the 3 car class 3D Oxted diesel sets. I enjoyed many trips on these in the late 60s and early 70s, and one vivid memory is of the token exchange on the short Tunbridge Wells, Grove Junction to Tunbridge Wells West single line.
My painting depicts the driver of a class 3D (later BR class 207) DEMU surrendering the single line token to the Tunbridge Wells West ‘B’ box signalman circa 1964.
