The South Eastern Railway was the first to reach Ramsgate with its line from Ashford. The line opened in April 1846 and ran via Canterbury. A branch from Ramsgate Town to Margate Sands station opened in December 1846. My painting depicts Ramsgate Town station in the South Eastern & Chatham Railway era circa 1905 with a local train departing for Ashford behind a Wainwright C class locomotive.

The Kent Coast Railway opened a competing line to Ramsgate in October 1863. This new line ran from London Victoria via Herne Bay, Margate and Broadstairs before descending to sea level at Ramsgate through a 1,124-yard (1,028 m) tunnel in to Ramsgate Harbour station, on the seafront immediately adjacent to the beach and harbour. The Kent Coast Railway was absorbed by the London Chatham & Dover Railway in 1871.
