Description
The ferry at Grove Ferry crossing the river Stour in Kent.
Depicted leaving Grove Ferry & Upstreet station, a British Railways class 2 2-6-2 tank locomotive passes over the level crossing with an Ashford bound local train in the late 1950s.
The Ramsgate – Ashford line was electrified in 1961.
Grove Ferry & Upstreet station closed at the end of 1965 and was demolished, together with the crossing keeper’s house soon after, the crossing gates being replaced by automatic lifting barriers.
The rope-hauled ferry was replaced by a concrete bridge in the late 1960s.
