The 1950s was the highpoint of the Atlantic Coast Express, with the first mile-a-minute timing of this Southern Region steam powered express. The train arrived in Salisbury at 12:23, 83 miles non-stop from Waterloo.
Improvements in the schedule continued until the final acceleration in 1961, when the journey time from Waterloo to Exeter Central was 2 hours 56 minutes.
